WINE AUCTIONS

The Napa Valley Wine Auction

At the 20th Annual Napa Valley Wine Auction, held in St. Helena on June 4, 00, world records were shattered for money generated at a wine auction, earning a staggering grand total of over 9.5 million dollars.

Chase Bailey, a retired Silicon Valley executive of Incline Village, Nevada, captured the top bids for the day paying 1.7 million dollars for more than five auction lots, including $500,000 for a six-liter bottle of Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon. The winning bid soared above the previous world record for a single bottle according to Christie's auctioneer Fritz Hatton, who has twenty years experience in wine bidding at the world-renowned auction house.

B.A. Adams of Pattterson, Louisiana, a ten year veteran of Napa Wine Auction bidding, dropped a staggering $700,000 for ten 1.5 liter bottles of Harlan Estate vintages, spanning a ten-year period from 1987-1996, it was the highest bid paid for a single auction lot.

The leading bid for the barrel auction was $33,000 for one case of Dalle Valle Maya Cabernet Sauvignon. The top private donor bid was for 107 bottles of assorted Napa Valley Wines selling for $50,000. The highest bid for the Art Auction was $42,000 for Susan Friedman's "Carneros" oil painting. The top bid for a cellar builder auction was for 18 bottles of Stony Hill Vineyard Chardonnay.

The final-results for the live, big board barrel, private donor, art and cellar builder auctions totaled $7,848,800, $1,287,900, $203,250, $190,400, and $49,250 for a grandiose total of $9,579,600. Of the total proceeds, 85% will go directly into many Napa County non-profits, while also allowing the local wineries and vintners to continue to build an endowment to sustain their own community for years to come.

The Napa Valley Vinters Association is a professional non-profit trade organization that sponsors the event, representing 177 Napa Valley wineries in marketing and promotional activities worldwide.
